Protecting PUR Hot Melt Adhesives From Moisture Damage

The Challenge

Polyurethane Reactive (PUR) hot melt adhesives are a crucial adhesive in various industries, including automotive, packaging, construction, and electronics. They provide strong, flexible, and long-lasting bonds that are ideal for applications like securing car door panels, dashboards, leather, Alcantara (a synthetic material used in car interiors), and even Carbon fibre panels.

But PUR adhesives come with a hidden challenge: moisture sensitivity. Since PUR is a reactive hot melt adhesive, it cures when exposed to humidity. Even a small amount of moisture can trigger premature curing, creating a hardened crust on top of the adhesive inside a drum.

This crust isn’t just cosmetic; it can spell disaster for manufacturers. When melted down, crust fragments can clog pipes, shut down production lines, and force costly cleaning of adhesive delivery systems that sometimes stretch for miles. In high-output environments, downtime isn’t an option.

The Solution

To eliminate the risk of moisture contamination, heat-resistant barrier foil drum liners were introduced. These liners, made from a unique blend of materials, including polypropylene, allow for filling temperatures up to 302°F, ensure that the PUR hot melt adhesives remain sealed, protected, and stable from the moment they’re packaged until they reach the end user.

Not only do the liners maintain product integrity, but they also enable manufacturers to switch from heavy steel drums to lightweight fibreboard drums, resulting in a significant cost-saving measure. Fibreboard drums, when paired with barrier liners, offer the same level of protection while reducing packaging and shipping costs.

And because we always keep these liners in stock and available with fast lead times, adhesive manufacturers and their customers no longer need to worry about production delays due to packaging shortages.

The Results

With barrier foil liners protecting PUR hot melt adhesives, end users can be confident that they receive material that’s clean, consistent, and ready for production: no more crust contamination, no more clogged pipes, and no more expensive shutdowns.

Moisture Protection

Vapor barrier foil offers the lowest known moisture vapor transmission rates, ensuring no premature curing.

Reliability

Adhesives arrive in optimal condition, ready for use on critical interior and structural components.

Efficiency

Faster production without the risk of moisture-related downtime.

Cost Savings

Switching from steel drums to fibreboard drums without compromising quality.

Conclusion

PUR hot melts are indispensable to modern manufacturing, but their sensitivity to moisture makes packaging critical. By adopting heat-resistant barrier liners, both adhesive producers and end users safeguard their operations, save money, and ensure that their adhesives perform exactly as designed.
